AIRSTRIPS IN MASAI MARA
There are scheduled twice-daily flights from Nairobi to Masai Mara that stop at several airstrips per flight. This route is served by several airlines, including Air Kenya, Safari link, and Governor’s Aviation. The nearest international airport to Masai Mara is Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi, with a flying duration of 1 hour. Masai Mara National Reserve is essentially a rugged, remote wilderness, yet easily accessible due to a network of all-weather gravel airstrips that include the following:
Keekorok Airstrip in the southeast of Masai Mara gives easy access to Lonwalet Hill and Ol Tukai Hill. It serves Keekorok Lodge, Mara Sarova Game Lodge, Sekenani Camp, Mara Sopa Lodge, Mara Topi Safari Lodge, Ashnil Camp, and Cottar’s Camp. For those who want to enjoy game drives in open-sided safari vehicles, this is recommended.
The largest civilian airport in Masai Mara National Reserve is Serena Airstrip with one unpaved runway measuring 3,445 feet. It serves Mara Serena Camp, Mara Intrepids Tented Camp, Fig Tree Camp, as well as Olare Mara Kempinski Masai Mara.
In the northernmost region of Masai Mara National Reserve is where the most famous all-weather gravel Musiara Airstrip is positioned. The nearest accommodations include Governor’s Camp, Moran Camp, Serian Camp, Little Governor’s Camp, and Neptune Mara Rianta Camp.
Kinchwa Tembo Airstrip is situated in the northernmost region of Masai Mara, serving camps like Kinchwa Tembo Camp, Bateleur Camp, Kilima Camp, and Mpata Lodge, among others.
Siana Springs Airstrip is located in the Siana Group Ranch, mainly serving Siana Springs Camp, Mara Bush Tops, Porini Main Camp, Ol Semi Hemingways Mara, along with Leleshwa Camp.
Ol Kiombo Airstrip is located just north of the Talek River, serving clients staying at Mara Intrepids, Mara Explorer, Fig Tree Camp, Porini Lion Camp, Tipilikwani Mara Camp, Base Camp, Naibor Camp, and Kicheche Bush Camp.
Ngerende Airstrip connects clients staying in various camps like Ngerende Island Lodge, Kicheche Mara Camp, Mara Safari Camp, Saruni Camp, Lokoswan Camp, and Richard’s Camp.
Olare Orok Airstrip is situated within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy to the north of Kenya’s famous Masai Mara National Reserve. It serves all camps and lodges within Orok Conservancy, including Mahalo Nzuri Safari Camp.
The Mara North Airstrip is positioned inside Mara North Conservancy, serving Kicheche Mara Camp, Saruni Mara Camp, and Saruni Wild Camp.
Angama Airstrip is a regional airstrip located in the Masai Mara region in the southwest part of Kenya. The airstrip accommodates regular flights traveling to and from this airstrip with air carriers such as Mombasa Air Safari, Air Kenya, and Safari link.
Ole Seki Airstrip is situated at the end of a ridge in the Naboisho Conservancy northwest of the Masai Mara National Reserve. It is around a 10-minute drive to Hemingway’s Ole Seki Mara Camp.
There is also a small but fairly busy and efficient domestic airport in Nairobi located along Langata Road known as Wilson Airport. It serves along with Capital Heights Hotel, Easy Hotel, Hadassah Hotel, Hotel Rio, to mention but a few.
If you would prefer a quick and easy air transfer to the airstrip closest to the safari lodge you will be staying at, book a flight to Masai Mara, where adventures start with a flight.
