Lions are a lovable animal species in Rwanda. Over 20 of them reside in Akagera National Park, where they are constantly on the move, searching for prey.
This grassland national park is located in eastern Rwanda and is home to a variety of wildlife, including zebras, rhinos, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, snakes, leopards, crocodiles, lizards, cheetahs, and numerous bird species such as the African grey hornbill, shoebill, Marabou stork, Lilac-breasted roller, Bare-faced go-away-bird, Fork-tailed drongo, Denham’s bustard, Red-faced barbet, Hamerkop, and saddle-billed stork.
The park offers activities, including bird watching due to its rich avian population, making it a haven for photographers. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema, the second largest lake in Rwanda, are also popular and take place at dawn (7:30 am and 9 am) and in the late afternoon (3 pm and 4:30 pm), providing a unique experience for those new to boat safaris.

Game drives involve touring the entire national park in a safari vehicle, observing the behavior of different animals. Early morning game drives allow visitors to see animals from the cat family, who are active during the night, as well as nocturnal predators hunting down their prey.
Fishing is a popular activity, particularly at Lake Shakani, where guests can participate in local fishing methods. Hiking through the park, guided by park personnel, allows tourists to explore the unique plant life and see various wildlife in their natural habitats.
Interacting with the local community provides insight into Rwandan culture and lifestyle, including their food, dances, and customs, which emphasize respect for all people. The park entry fee is 12,000 RWF for adults and 8,000 RWF for children, and travelers can reach the park via road or air transport.

Road transport by a 4×4 safari car takes 2-3 hours from Kigali to Akagera National Park. If flying, Akagera Aviation provides air transport services. A valid visa for Rwanda and the park is required, obtainable either online or upon arrival for a fee of 50 USD for single entry. A valid passport and a yellow fever vaccination card are also necessary.
Here are some recommended items to pack for a lion safari:
- Safari clothes: Earth-colored clothing such as brown, which does not attract insects.
- Safari hats: Canvas safari hats, leather safari hats, adventure hats, panama hats, and more to protect from the sun.
- Insect repellent: To protect your skin from bugs and mosquitoes.
- Safari jackets: Especially for cold nights in the park, examples include Beadnell jacket, Banana Republic Norfolk jacket, Norfolk Linen cotton jacket, Prana Sancho jacket, and many more.
Rwanda was once a German colony in 1899 but later gained independence. This glittering country was highly centralized, with Tutsi kings owning most of the riches, but it later experienced political disorganization.
Remember, life is a journey, so unload any emotional baggage by visiting Rwanda for a lion safari and experience the fantasy.
