Nyakamwe mountain gorilla is a splinter of Humba mountain gorilla family,. Nyakamwe together with his elder brother were members of Rugendo mountain gorilla family but decided to break away from their father’s group to form their own gorilla family in 1998.
After some years Nyakamwe and Humba expanded the group from 9 individuals to 16 individuals but got a disagreement in 2014 and Nyakamwe left his elder brother to form his own gorilla family, he left the group with 10 members and its now composed of 11 members made of 2 silverbacks, 1 black back, 3 adult females, 2 juveniles, 1 sub adult female and 2 babies.
Nyakamwe mountain gorilla family can be trekked from Bukima sector of Virunga national park.
Mountain gorillas are the worlds largest and an endangered species of primates inhabiting Virunga national park in Democratic republic of Congo, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda, Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga national park in Uganda.
Mountain gorillas inhabit tropical rainforests and sub tropical rainforests of the above mentioned national parks, they live on high cold elevations but they have thick and long fur that helps them to adapt to their environment.
Gorillas were almost becoming extinct in the 19th century but the numbers have increased from about 300 mountain gorillas 1004 mountain gorillas due to conservation being put up to protect this great apes.
