Situated in Murambi Village, Remera Cell, Nyamagabe District in the Southern Province, Murambi Memorial is one of the most important historical sites in Rwanda.
It gives tourists a deep understanding of what happened during the 1994 genocide. The site is 126 kilometers from Kigali and 3.5 kilometers from Nyamagabe town.
Murambi Genocide Memorial (formerly Murambi Technical School) is the burial site for over 50,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Tours of the memorial site are often led by survivors of the genocide.
The memorial center officially opened to visitors on 26th May 2011. It was originally known as Murambi Technical Institute and is one of Rwanda’s historical sites.

Other Memorial Centers
- Kigali Genocide Memorial: The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most accessible genocide site in Rwanda, located just a 10-minute drive from the center of Kigali. It is in Gisozi and is the burial site for 250,000 victims of the genocide. The memorial displays exhibits of the victims, including their skulls, belongings, and photographs.
- Nyamata Memorial: Nyamata Memorial is located 30 kilometers south of Kigali. It is the resting place for 25,000 victims of the genocide. Many Tutsis had gathered there, believing it was a safe refuge, but it turned into a death trap as the Hutus forced their way in and massacred them.
- Nyanza Memorial: The Nyanza Memorial is located at Ecole Technique Officielle in Kicukiro District, Kigali. It is the site where annual commemorations are held every April, with thousands gathering to honor the victims of the genocide.
- Bisesero Genocide Memorial: Bisesero Memorial is 60 kilometers from Kibuye and is the resting place for over 40,000 victims. This site tells the story of how the Tutsis resisted the Hutus, using stones and sticks as their only weapons.
- Nyarubuye Memorial: Nyarubuye Memorial is 140 kilometers from Kigali and is the burial site for 2,000 victims. Another accessible memorial is Ntarama Memorial, located about an hour’s drive from Kigali. Over 5,000 victims of the genocide were buried there.
