The Kabirizi mountain gorilla family was first known as Ndugutse, named after the silverback Ndugutse who once led the group. He died after getting caught in crossfire between Rwandan rebels and the Congo army. After his death, a wild lone gorilla named Kabirizi became the leader of the group in 1998.
Kabirizi, the silverback currently leading the group, is known for his bravery in protecting his family. He even lost his upper and lower canine teeth during a fight with another gorilla. The group lives in the Bukima sector of Virunga National Park.
The name of the group was changed from Ndugutse to Kabirizi in memory of a former ICCN director who died in a traffic accident in the 1990s. Today, Kabirizi faces a leadership challenge from another silverback in the group named Masibo. At the time of habituation, the group had 32 individuals.
The number of gorillas in any group often changes because of births, deaths, or other reasons. Tourists must always follow the rules and guidelines during gorilla trekking, especially when close to the gorillas.
Kabirizi Gorilla Permits
Gorilla trekking permits in the Democratic Republic of Congo cost $400. Congo offers the lowest-priced gorilla permits, but the security situation in the country can be uncertain.
Before buying a permit, it’s important to check whether it is safe to visit the park. It is also advised to book your permit at least three months in advance, especially during the peak season.
Mountain gorillas in Congo live in rainforests with thick vegetation, which makes trekking more challenging compared to Rwanda. Besides being physically fit, visitors should bring waterproof hiking boots, garden gloves, insect repellent, long-sleeved clothes, warm clothing, plenty of drinking water, energy snacks, and other essentials.
Congo can be visited at any time of the year, but the best time is during the dry season from June to September. During this time, the roads to the park are easier to use, and the trekking paths are usually in good condition.
