Uganda offers several mountains where tourists can do hiking or climbing from. Some of these include mount Ruwenzori, Mount Elgon, mount Sabinyo, mount Muhabura and Mount Gahinga among the rest. In Rwanda tourists can hike mount Karasimbi, mount Sabinyo, mount Bisoke, mount Gahinga and mount Muhabura. Most hiking activities in Rwanda are done in Volcanoes national park though you can also enjoy the activity in many other places in the country like in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Rwanda is also home to five of the Virunga massif volcanoes straddling across Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic republic of Congo. Below are some of the mountains you can hike in Uganda and Rwanda.

Mount Rwenzori

Mount Rwenzori is Uganda’s highest mountain standing on an elevation of 5,109 meters above sea level with its highest peaks being permanently snow capped ranging about 120 kilometers long and 65 kilometers wide. Mount is made up of six massifs separated by deep gorges and mount Stanley being the highest peak.

Mount Rwenzori is also commonly known as mountains of the moon and boasts with different vegetation zones of bamboo zone, evergreen forest zone, alpine zone, nival zone and heather zone while the top is covered with glaciers and snow. Mount Ruwenzori is a number choice for hiking while in Uganda providing magnificent views, wild life, tree species, birds and so much more the trek can last from 7-10 days depending on the root your using.

Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is located in the Eastern part of Uganda bordering Kenya though its highest point called Wagagagi is located on the Ugandan side, mount Elgon boasts with the largest intact caldera in the world making it an idle place for hiking safaris. Mount Elgon is believed to have been Africa’s highest mountain exceeding Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania but its heights were reduced by millennia erosion to 4,321 meters above sea level. Mount Elgon is the oldest solitary volcano in the whole world with the largest volcanic base. Mount Elgon is well known for its unique vegetation cover, rare bird species, enchanting waterfalls and breath taking views of Karamoja plains. The climb is not so strenuous but very rewarding for those who make it there.

Mount Karisimbi

Mount Karisimbi is the highest mountain in Rwanda standing on 4,507 meters above sea level, it’s also the highest of the eight Virunga massif volcanoes and it’s located at the boarder of Rwanda and Congo. The word Karisimbi was derived from a local word for “Amasimbi” to mean “snow” in the middle slopes of mount Karisimbi is the place where the famous primatologist Dian Fossey built her research institute for the study and conservation of mountain gorillas which later led to her death in 1985.

Climbing to the top of mount Karisimbi is one of the best activities to accompany your gorilla trekking in Rwanda, there are a lot of primates and birds to be seen on a hike to mount Karisimbi the top of the mountain provides panoramic views of most of the Virunga volcanoes and you can also visit Dian Fossey’s grave and learn more about her life.

Mount Muhabura

Mount Muhabura is the third highest of the eight Virunga volcanoes, the mountain is located at the boarder of Uganda and Rwanda with an elevation of 4,127 meters above sea level. Mount Muhabura is also the steepest of the eight Volcanoes therefore climbing or hiking will need technical and experienced mountain climbers. Mount Muhabura has got a beautiful crater lake of 40 meters at the summit; the mountain provides scenic views at the top and can be climbed within 1 day.
