Kyambura Gorge is located in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwestern Uganda. It is also known as “The Valley of Apes.” This amazing underground forest is about 1 kilometer wide, 32 kilometers long, and 100 meters deep.

The name Kyambura comes from the Kyambura River, which flows through the forest. The word “Kyambura” means “I couldn’t find it.” The river got this name because, according to local stories, it once flooded and swept away people and property. When locals searched for their belongings and loved ones, they could not find anything.

The gorge is home to habituated chimpanzees, a type of great ape that shares 98% of its DNA with humans. Unfortunately, chimpanzees are endangered, with fewer than 300,000 remaining in the wild across tropical Africa.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge

Chimpanzee trekking is the main activity in Kyambura Gorge. Tracking can be done in the morning or afternoon. Visitors walk through the forest searching for chimpanzees, and once they are found, you can spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat.

The number of chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge is small, so sightings are not guaranteed. Chimpanzee trekking permits cost $100 per person per trek, and children under 15 and people with infections are not allowed to join the activity.

There are 16 tracking permits available daily, 8 for the morning and 8 for the afternoon. Permits can be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, a tour operator, or the Mweya Visitor Information Centre. During peak season, permits should be booked in advance.

Wildlife Watching in Kyambura Gorge

Besides chimpanzees, Kyambura Gorge is home to other animals and primates, including black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, giant forest hogs, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, bush babies, and bushbucks.

The gorge also hosts many bird species, some of which are unique to the forest, including the blue-headed bee-eater, African finfoot, bar-tailed godwit, lesser flamingo, greater flamingo, martial eagle, Verreaux’s eagle-owl, African skimmer, rare shoebill, black-rumped buttonquail, white-tailed lark, white-winged warbler, African broadbill, Chapin’s flycatcher, black bee-eater, papyrus gonolek, corncrake, pink-backed pelican, and many others.

How to Get There

Kyambura Gorge is located 420 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital, taking about 6 to 7 hours to drive there by road. Visitors can also take a chartered flight from Kajjansi Airfield or Entebbe International Airport to Mweya and then drive about an hour to the gorge.

Kyambura Gorge does not have hotels, but visitors can stay in nearby accommodations in Queen Elizabeth National Park, including Kyambura Gorge Lodge, Katara Lodge, Kingfisher Camp, and Jacana Lodge, among others.

Combining Kyambura Gorge With Queen Elizabeth National Park

Since Kyambura Gorge sits within Queen Elizabeth National Park, it pairs naturally with the park’s other signature activities, including game drives, tree-climbing lion trekking in the Ishasha sector, and a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. Many visitors add a chimpanzee trek in the gorge as a half-day activity alongside a broader wildlife safari through the rest of the park, making the most of a single stay in this part of southwestern Uganda.

Kwita Izina is a gorilla naming ceremony that takes place in Kinigi, Rwanda, at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where mountain gorillas can be trekked. The ceremony celebrates and names baby mountain gorillas while also raising awareness about the importance of protecting them.

The ceremony is named after the traditional naming of newborn babies in Rwanda, with the aim of monitoring newborns and protecting them in their natural environment. Applied to gorillas, the ceremony has contributed to conservation efforts both locally and internationally.

How Baby Gorillas Are Named

Baby mountain gorillas are named after ongoing observation and monitoring of each gorilla within its family in their natural habitat. Since the ceremony was established, over 200 mountain gorillas have been named. It began years ago when trekkers, guides, researchers, and veterinarians gathered annually to celebrate and name baby gorillas born that year, with the event formally introduced in 2005.

Those chosen to name the baby gorillas are carefully selected, and gorillas are typically named according to their social behaviors or the environment in which they were born. Namers have included local and international conservationists, diplomats, and philanthropists. In 2018, 23 mountain gorillas were named under the theme “Conservation is Conservation,” marking the thirteenth edition of the ceremony.

Other Activities at the Kwita Izina

Various local traditional dancing groups are invited to perform at the Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony, giving visitors a chance to enjoy Rwandan traditional dances. There’s also a section where you can learn basket weaving and try making Rwandan local food.

Many local people benefit from the event by bringing handmade crafts and other goods for sale, giving visitors a chance to pick up souvenirs to take home for remembrance or as gifts for loved ones.

Combining Kwita Izina With Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is the most common tourist activity in Rwanda, and you can trek mountain gorillas either before or after the ceremony. Gorilla trekking offers a rewarding chance to get close to these relatives of humans, with an hour given for observation. Permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 and should be booked in advance before arriving in the country. Many visitors combine this with our Rwanda tours to build a full itinerary around the ceremony.

Volcano Climbing Near Kwita Izina

Rwanda is home to five of the eight Virunga volcanoes, which straddle Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Climbing to the top of the mountain gorilla habitat is well worth doing when visiting Volcanoes National Park. The mountain slopes are home not only to mountain gorillas but also to other primates and a wide range of birds, along with wide views of the land of a thousand hills from the peaks.

Kalinzu Forest is located near Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwestern Uganda. It is the second-best destination for chimpanzee trekking in the country, after Kibale Forest National Park.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kalinzu Forest

Chimpanzee trekking is the most popular activity in Kalinzu Forest. It involves going into the jungle to search for chimpanzees, which can take about 2 to 3 hours depending on their location.

Once the group finds the chimpanzees, visitors are given one hour to observe them and take pictures. However, flash photography is not allowed, since chimpanzees do not like it.

Kalinzu Forest is home to 220 chimpanzees and is also a haven for bird watchers, with 379 bird species. It has 414 tree species, 97 moth species, and 262 butterfly species.

Tourists can combine a visit to Kalinzu Forest with wildlife viewing at Queen Elizabeth National Park. The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu Forest is $130 per person per trek.

The minimum age for trekking is 12 years, and people with infections like the flu are not allowed to participate.

Nature Guided Walks

Kalinzu Forest has several trails for guided nature walks and hiking. The most popular trails include the Waterfall Trail, which leads to the beautiful Kilyantama Waterfalls; the River Trail, which passes through the former elephant river, once home to many elephants; the Valley Trail, which takes visitors through a scenic valley ridge with views of birds and primates; and the Palm Trail, which highlights different tree species, with guides explaining how some are used to treat various illnesses.

Nature walks can last from one hour to a half day or even a full day, depending on the visitor’s interest.

Bird Watching in Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu Forest is a great place for bird watching, with about 379 bird species recorded. Some notable species include the black and white casqued hornbill, great blue turaco, black-billed turaco, and many others.

Getting to Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu Forest is about a 45 minute drive from the Mweya sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It can also be reached from Kampala by road, which takes about 6 to 7 hours.

Accommodation and Essentials

There are no hotels or lodges at Kalinzu Forest, except for a campsite. Visitors staying overnight can camp but must bring their own camping gear.

Those planning half-day activities can carry packed lunches to enjoy at the picnic sites.

When visiting Kalinzu Forest, tourists should bring good hiking shoes, garden gloves, a raincoat, long-sleeved clothing, insect repellent, a hat, a packed lunch, and plenty of drinking water.

Why Kalinzu Is a Strong Alternative to Kibale

For travelers already exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu Forest offers a convenient and often less crowded alternative to Kibale for chimpanzee trekking, given its short 45 minute drive from Mweya. Its lower permit cost compared to Kibale also makes it an appealing option for budget-conscious travelers who still want a genuine chance to see chimpanzees in the wild, alongside a strong variety of birds, trees, and other primates along the way.

Kisoro Town is located in the southwestern part of Uganda. It is in the hilliest part of the country, covering an area of 729.7 square kilometers, with an estimated population of 266,222 people based on 2009 data. The nearest town to Kisoro is Kabale Town.

Kisoro is 550 kilometers from Kampala, and it takes about 10 to 12 hours to drive there by road. Tourists can also fly to Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield, which takes about two hours.

If Kisoro is part of a bigger southwestern Uganda trip you’re planning, check out Uganda tours for more options.

Tourist Activities in Kisoro Town

Visit Lake Mutanda: Lake Mutanda is a beautiful lake surrounded by the Virunga Volcanoes and Kisoro Hills in western Uganda. Tourists can take a local dugout canoe to explore one of its 15 islands while enjoying wide views of the Virunga Massif Volcanoes.

Gorilla Trekking: Kisoro is close to Mgahinga National Park, home to mountain gorillas. Visitors can fly to Kisoro Airstrip and drive to the park. The town is also near gorilla parks in Congo and Rwanda. Gorilla trekking is one of the most popular tourist activities in Africa, and gorillas are closely related to humans, sharing 98% of their DNA. The cost of trekking is $800 per person, and tourists are allowed one hour to observe the gorillas.

Mountain Climbing: Kisoro offers opportunities for volcanic mountain climbing. Three of the Virunga Mountains in Uganda are home to mountain gorillas: Mount Gahinga (3,475 meters), Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 meters), and Mount Muhabura (4,127 meters). These volcanoes provide an exciting climbing experience with wide views. Mount Sabyinyo, for example, offers views of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo from its summit.

Cultural Encounters: Visitors can experience the culture of Kisoro by exploring the Batwa Trail. The Batwa are an indigenous group who lived in the gorilla forests before being relocated. A Batwa guide will share stories of their way of life, including how they hunted for food, used plants for medicine, and practiced their traditions. You can also visit the Bakiga people, who live outside the park and are known for their farming activities.

Golden Monkey Trekking: Golden monkeys are an endangered species, and Mgahinga National Park has the highest population, with about 3,000 to 4,000 monkeys. These monkeys live in groups of 40 to 100 and are known for their playful nature and unique appearance. Golden monkey trekking is affordable and easier than gorilla trekking, with no limit on the number of trekkers.

Why Kisoro Is a Convenient Base

Kisoro’s location makes it one of the most convenient jumping-off points in southwestern Uganda, sitting within easy reach of Mgahinga National Park, Lake Mutanda, and the border crossings into both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This makes the town a practical base for travelers combining gorilla trekking with volcano hiking, golden monkey tracking, or a multi-country itinerary across the Virunga region, all without needing to relocate between activities.

Kabale Town, sometimes also known as “Kaston,” is located in Kabale District, Uganda, in western Uganda. The word Kabale means “a small stone” in the local Rukiga language. The estimated population of Kabale is 41,350 people.

Kabale Town is situated 10 kilometers from the Katuna border with Rwanda. The town is bustling with various tourist activities, and it is also a common stop for tourists who book gorilla trekking tours from Kigali.

If Kabale fits into a wider trip you’re planning, take a look at Uganda tours for more options.

Top Things to Do in Kabale Town

Gorilla Trekking: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located near Kabale town, is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas and is the only place where gorilla habituation can be done. The park features approximately 15 habituated mountain gorilla families, with two groups currently being habituated. A maximum of eight people are allowed to trek with a given gorilla family, and visitors are permitted one hour of observation once the gorillas are found. The cost of gorilla permits is $800 per person, while gorilla habituation costs $1,500 per person.

Visit Edirisa House: The House of Edirisa is a replica museum designed as a traditional homestead, showcasing the culture of the Bakiga people from years past. It also serves as a departure point for canoe trips to the highlands of Kabale, where visitors can enjoy performances by local traditional dancers and purchase souvenirs from a nearby gift shop.

Visit Lake Bunyonyi: Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda’s most scenic lake, is located in Kabale town. Also referred to as the “Lake of Little Lakes,” it is an ideal spot for relaxation after gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park. Visitors can swim in the lake, as it is bilharzia-free. Boat cruises to various islands, such as Punishment Island, historically used as a place of exile for unmarried pregnant girls, are also available. Additionally, Lake Bunyonyi is a great destination for bird watching.

Mountain Biking: Kabale, one of Uganda’s hilliest towns, is perfect for mountain biking. Cycling around the lake and through village farm plantations provides an adventurous experience in the African countryside.

Where to Stay

Kabale town, Bwindi National Park, and Lake Bunyonyi offer a variety of accommodation options, ranging from budget to mid-range and luxury lodges.

Some recommended places to stay include Green Hill Hotel, Cephas Inn, Arcadia Cottages, Bunyonyi Safari Resort, Nature’s Prime Island, Bunyonyi Overland Resort, and Edirisa Guest Hotel.

How to Get There

Kabale town is approximately 470 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. It can be reached in 7 to 8 hours by road from Kampala. Alternatively, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield.

Why Kabale Makes a Great Base

Kabale’s proximity to both the Katuna border and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park makes it a natural stopover for travelers moving between Rwanda and Uganda’s gorilla trekking circuit. With Lake Bunyonyi, cultural sites like Edirisa House, and mountain biking all within easy reach, visitors can comfortably fill a day or two here either before or after their gorilla trek, without needing to venture far from town.

Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, now known as Gorilla Guardians Village, is located near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The people living in Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village once relied on hunting and gathering within the park for survival.

Since being relocated, they now live in the surrounding villages, including Iby’Iwacu itself.

The people at the center are former hunters and poachers who have reformed to become cultural performers, craftsmen, and participants in other tourist activities.

Activities at the Cultural Village

Cultural Performances: Rwanda offers unique and authentic cultural activities beyond gorilla trekking. Visitors can enjoy traditional dances and songs performed by energetic dancers under the stars. Alongside these performances, guests can learn how to weave baskets and take part in other traditional activities.

Traditional Wedding Ceremony: At Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, tourists can take part in a traditional marriage ceremony, playing the role of a Rwandan king or queen. This is one of the more memorable traditional activities in Africa, with locals cheering and celebrating your “engagement” and “marriage.” Many locally handmade crafts are also available at the center, which visitors can buy as souvenirs or gifts. Guests can also taste Rwanda’s staple food and learn how it is prepared.

Other Activities Near the Village

Gorilla Trekking: Gorilla trekking is the main reason thousands of tourists visit Rwanda every year. It takes place in Volcanoes National Park, in the northern part of the country near the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person, and tourists are given one hour to observe the gorillas. Children under 15 and unwell tourists are not permitted to trek.

Volcanic Climbing: Rwanda is home to five of the eight Virunga volcanoes shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These mountains sit within Volcanoes National Park and include Mount Muhabura, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Bisoke. Tourists can add mountain climbing to their cultural experience, with each mountain offering a distinct adventure and wide views.

Combining Culture With Adventure

A visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village pairs naturally with a gorilla trekking itinerary in Volcanoes National Park, since the village sits just outside the park’s boundary. Many visitors choose to spend a morning or afternoon here either before or after their trek, using the time to unwind while getting an authentic look at Rwandan rural life and tradition, rather than treating gorilla trekking as the only reason to visit this part of the country.

Nkuringo Sector is one of the four sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This sector sits on a ridge along the southern edge of the park, with wide views over the forest and, on clear days, the Virunga volcanoes in the distance. Nkuringo Sector is home to several habituated gorilla families and is a good base for gorilla trekking, birdwatching, and community walks. Book a Uganda trek to see how a visit to Nkuringo Sector fits into your safari.

Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo Sector

Gorilla trekking is the main activity in Nkuringo Sector. Trails here climb steep ridges and valleys, so trekking in this sector suits visitors who are reasonably fit and ready for a demanding hike. The climb can take longer than in other sectors of Bwindi, but the views along the way and the time spent with the gorillas make it worth the effort. Rangers set the pace based on where the gorillas were last seen, and treks can run from a few hours to most of the day.

Most treks start early in the morning at the park headquarters, where rangers brief visitors before assigning each group to a gorilla family. Visitors should come prepared with sturdy hiking boots, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, and enough water and snacks for a full day out. Porters can be hired locally to carry bags and help on the steeper stretches, and hiring one also supports people living around the park.

A permit is required for each trek and should be booked well in advance, since only a limited number of permits are issued per family per day. Because Nkuringo Sector is close to the Rwanda border, it is also a popular stop for travelers starting or ending their trip in Rwanda, and many combine a Nkuringo trek with time in Volcanoes National Park across the border.

Gorilla Families in Nkuringo Sector

The Nkuringo gorilla family was the first group habituated in this sector and was opened for tourism in 2004. The name “Nkuringo” means “round” in the local language, taken from the rounded hill where the group was first sighted. The family was habituated after repeated conflict with nearby communities, as the gorillas often raided local gardens, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority stepped in to manage the situation through habituation.

The group was led by the silverback Nkuringo until his death in April 2008, after which leadership passed to his sons, Safari and the late Rafiki. Today the Nkuringo family has 19 members and includes a set of twins, which makes it a popular family to track.

Over the years, other gorilla families have also been habituated in Nkuringo Sector, giving trekkers more than one group to choose from when booking a permit. Some of these groups are smaller than the Nkuringo family, and each has its own character, from calmer groups that stay close to the trailhead to more active ones that range further into the forest. Ask your tour operator which family is currently assigned to your permit, since group locations and sizes can shift from year to year.

Spending time with a gorilla family in Nkuringo Sector usually means an hour with the group once they are found, watched over by rangers who keep track of the gorillas’ health and movements. This close monitoring is part of why sightings of infants and young gorillas are common on treks in this sector.

Accommodation in Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo Sector has a small but growing range of lodges and campsites, from budget guesthouses to mid-range and upmarket lodges set along the ridge overlooking the park. Many properties are built to take advantage of the sector’s elevated position, with views of the forest below. Rooms at the upper end tend to come with private verandas facing the park, while budget options are simpler but still offer a base within easy reach of the trailhead.

Because Nkuringo Sector has fewer beds than other parts of Bwindi, lodges here fill up quickly during peak trekking season, so it is worth booking accommodation at the same time as your gorilla permit. Staying close to the trailhead also cuts down on early morning travel time, which matters when trek briefings start at first light.

How to Get to Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo Sector can be reached by road from Kampala, a long drive that most visitors break up over one or two days, often stopping at Queen Elizabeth National Park along the way. The final stretch into the sector runs along winding hill roads, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.

Travelers coming from Rwanda can reach Nkuringo Sector directly from the Cyanika or Kyanika border crossing, which makes it a convenient entry point for safaris that combine Uganda and Rwanda in one trip. Domestic flights to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips are also available for those who want to cut down on travel time, with a road transfer to the park from either airstrip.

Given the terrain, the limited permits, and the demand from travelers on both sides of the border, it is worth booking your Nkuringo Sector trek and accommodation well ahead of your travel dates. Planning transport, lodging, and your gorilla permit together makes it easier to fit Nkuringo Sector into a wider Uganda or Rwanda safari itinerary.

Lake Mutanda is a freshwater lake situated in the southwestern part of Uganda. It is one of the ideal places to visit while exploring Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for gorilla trekking. Lake Mutanda is easily accessible for tourists on Kigali to Bwindi gorilla trekking tours.

The Rutshuru River flows out of Lake Mutanda and heads north to Lake Edward. Lake Mutanda has 15 islands and is surrounded by farms and green plants, making it a strikingly beautiful spot.

If you’re planning a wider trip, take a look at our Uganda tours to see how a stop here can fit in.

Things to Do at Lake Mutanda

Canoeing: Canoeing is a popular activity at Lake Mutanda. You can use traditional wooden canoes to explore the lake and see its plants, animals, and islands, and you might also spot water birds along the way.

Fishing: If you like fishing, Lake Mutanda is a great place to try it. You can go out with local fishermen who know the lake well. The lake has fish like mud-fish, catfish, and tilapia.

Bicycle Tours: Lake Mutanda is in a hilly area, perfect for mountain biking. You can rent bikes in Kisoro town or bring your own, making biking a fun way to explore the countryside.

Walking and Hiking: There are many trails around the lake and its islands. You can hike from Buhoma to Nkuringo and then on to Lake Mutanda. While walking, you might see birds like the great cormorant, malachite kingfisher, and pied kingfisher.

Mountain Climbing: Lake Mutanda is near three volcanoes: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. These mountains offer wide views of the Virunga ranges. Mount Sabyinyo can only be climbed from Uganda, and its summit is shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

Things to Do Near Lake Mutanda

Gorilla Trekking: Gorilla trekking is a major reason tourists visit Africa. You can trek to see mountain gorillas in Uganda at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or Bwindi National Park, or in Rwanda at Volcanoes National Park. A permit costs $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda.

Golden Monkey Trekking: Golden monkeys live in Mgahinga National Park. These monkeys are fun to watch, since they are playful and move in large groups of up to 100. It is also cheaper to see golden monkeys than gorillas, and they are generally easier to find.

Where to Stay and How to Get There

There are many places to stay near Lake Mutanda, such as Volcanoes Hotel, Sky Blue Hotel, Mgahinga Safari Lodge, Gahinga Rest Camp, Travelers Rest Camp, Travelers Rest Inn, and Mutanda Lake Resort.

You can get to Lake Mutanda by driving 454 kilometers from Kampala, which takes about 10 to 11 hours. You can also fly from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip.

Lake Mutanda can be visited at any time of the year.

Combining Lake Mutanda With Gorilla Trekking

Given its location right between Bwindi and Mgahinga, Lake Mutanda makes an ideal stop either before or after a day of gorilla trekking, offering a calmer, more relaxed pace after a demanding hike through the forest. Whether you spend an afternoon canoeing between the islands or simply take in the views of the surrounding Virunga volcanoes, the lake rounds out a southwestern Uganda itinerary nicely alongside its more famous wildlife attractions.

Buhoma sector was the first part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to be visited by tourists for gorilla trekking adventures. It is also home to the oldest gorilla family in the park. Explore our Uganda safari packages to see how Buhoma fits into your trip.

Buhoma is located in the northwestern part of the park.

Buhoma Gorilla Trekking

Buhoma gorilla trekking is a rewarding experience but very competitive. It is hard to book a permit in Buhoma just a few days before your tour, so it’s best to book early for a better chance.

Buhoma is one of the sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. The other sectors are Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Rushaga.

Buhoma was the first place in Uganda where gorilla trekking started. The Mubare gorilla family in Buhoma was the first group to be habituated, in 1993.

Gorilla Groups to Trek in Buhoma Sector

Mubare Gorilla Family: Named after the Mubare Hills in Bwindi National Park, where trackers and rangers first sighted the group. This is the oldest mountain gorilla family in Uganda and is found in the Buhoma sector. The group was led by Ruhondeza, a silverback, at the time of habituation. Ruhondeza died in 2013 after being injured in a fight with another silverback, Kanyonyi, who wanted to take over the group. Ruhondeza was known for being ambitious and often fought rivals and younger males to maintain his dominance.

Habinyanja Gorilla Family: Gets its name from the local word “Nyanja,” meaning a pool of water, since the group was first sighted near one. The family was habituated in 1997 and opened for tourism in 1999. It was originally led by Mugurusi, the dominant silverback, who passed leadership to his two sons. Mugurusi’s sons, Mwirima and Rwansigazi, could not get along due to their differences: Mwirima preferred staying in one area, while Rwansigazi was an adventurer who loved exploring new places. This led to the group splitting in 2002, with Mwirima forming his own family, now called the Rushegura Gorilla Family. Rwansigazi stayed with the Habinyanja family and later handed leadership to his son Makara, who now leads the group.

Rushegura Gorilla Family: Also known as Group R, formed in 2002 when silverback Mwirima left the Habinyanja family to start his own group. Mwirima died in 2015, and the family is now led by Kabukojo.

What to Bring for Buhoma Gorilla Trekking

When planning to trek gorillas in Buhoma, tourists should not forget hiking boots, warm clothes, a raincoat, garden gloves, energy snacks, drinking water, and other personal items.

Buhoma can be visited all year round, but the best months are June to August and December to February, during the dry season. Rain during the wet season can sometimes affect the trekking experience.

Buhoma Gorilla Permits

Buhoma sector is home to four habituated gorilla families. Eight permits are available for trekking each group daily, meaning the Buhoma sector provides 24 gorilla permits in total per day.

It is one of the most visited sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, having been the first place where gorilla trekking began in Uganda, starting in 1993 with the Mubare gorilla family.

Buhoma has a lower altitude compared to other regions, making gorilla trekking here less demanding. The gorilla families in this sector are also easy to reach, and in many cases, gorillas can even be seen near the park headquarters.

Most tourists who want to combine gorilla trekking with wildlife viewing choose Buhoma gorilla permits, since the sector is closest to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where visitors can go on game drives and take boat cruises along the Kazinga Channel, an area rich in wildlife.

Booking a gorilla permit in the Buhoma sector is especially convenient for travelers using air transport. AeroLink Uganda operates two flights daily to Kihihi Airstrip, the closest airstrip to the Buhoma sector.

The cost of gorilla permits in the Buhoma sector matches other regions of the park, with a trekking permit costing $800 per person.

Bird Watching After Gorilla Trekking in Buhoma

Apart from mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is also home to forest elephants, giant forest genets, African golden civets, bushbucks, and several antelope species, along with primates like chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys.

Bwindi has 348 bird species, some found only in this area, including the African green broadbill, Chapin’s flycatcher, Shelley’s crimsonwing, short-tailed warbler, Grauer’s rush warbler, and many more.

You can take nature walks in the Buhoma sector using trails like the Munyaga River Trail, Waterfall Trail, Rushura Hill Trail, Muzabajiro Loop Trail, and River Ivy Trail, offering wide views and chances to see birds and other wildlife.

Community and Village Walks in Buhoma Sector

Tourists visiting the Buhoma sector can take part in community walks to learn about local life. One key group is the Batwa people, who once lived in the forest alongside the gorillas for over 500,000 years before the area became a national park.

The Batwa depended on the forest for food, medicine, and shelter. Today, they share their skills with visitors, including how they hunted and gathered fruits, and visitors can meet a traditional healer and enjoy songs and dances from their culture.

Accommodation in Buhoma Sector

Buhoma is known for having some of the best luxury lodges in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

High-end travelers can stay at lodges such as A&K Sanctuary, Buhoma Lodge, Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge, and Mahogany Springs Lodge, among others.

Other options in the Buhoma sector include Engagi Lodge, Buhoma Community Haven, Bwindi View Bandas, Bwindi Volcano Lodge, Gorilla Mist Camp, Kitandara Tented Camp, and Gift of Nature Lodge, among others, with the right choice depending on budget and where your gorilla permit was booked.

How to Get to Buhoma Sector

Buhoma is the easiest sector to access in Bwindi. It is about 550 kilometers from Kampala, taking around 9 to 10 hours by road. From the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, it’s a 4 hour drive. You can also fly from Kajjansi Airfield or Entebbe International Airport to an airstrip near the park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be visited throughout the year. However, the best time is during the dry months of June to September and December to February, when roads are easier to use and hiking trails are not muddy.
